Members may be seeing copies of picket schedules posted on bulletin boards soon. We have no inside information on a strike or lock-out in the future or any additional information that has not been shared with the membership. This is just a preperation step in the event that anything were to unfold in the future.

This was an email from Tom Stribling in Labor Relations to Gail Evans.

Gail,

Please accept this as the 14 day notice that we are canceling the four day – ten hour work week trials for the Childs organization in Maryland and DC.  In addition to the notices recently sent for Virginia, all 4/10 trials have been canceled for the Childs organization throughout Potomac.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

There was a discussion with the DRC in their attempt to 'extend' our current schedule until the end of January. Their reason was that they don't see the need to have the members that are leaving payroll under the current EISP pick on the schedule. The question was asked 'what 4 weeks of the current schedule would they use'? The 1st 4weeks, the2nd 4 weeks or the 3rd 4 weeks! They didn't have an answer!
The question was also asked if they would consider allowing swaps between members for weekends and a.d.o.s and any vacation requests? Their response was of course they would. Then they were asked "as they currently administer this" and they stupidly said 'of course'. We have heard nothing but complaints about how the members can't switch days or get an answer from the DRC on approvals. So this answer was not a good one.
This is nothing more than another attempt by management to circumvent our contract and not allow the members to select their schedules. This time it will only be 4 weeks of an assigned schedule, next time it could be 8 weeks and then it will end with the company assigning your schedules forever! We can not allow this to happen.
There are easier ways to resolve their dilemma in schedule selection other than the fact that were unprepared to put-out the schedule to the membership and allowing us to pick. In the past when folks have left payroll their line was just removed from the schedule. If they would rather not have the EISP candidates pick and they actually stay past Dec 30th they could work on a Monday thru Friday schedule until it is re-picked. Bottom line is they are just slapping the current membership in the face with another contract violation because of their inability to run this company.
We would like to see grievances filled on behalf of every member on this contract violation. It should be time for this membership to show the company that we won't take this harassment any more and show them who really runs this company. We should be prepared  stand together and think about our best response for a job action. Be prepared!!!

In solidarity,
Kevin Miller

In response to your questions yesterday, the retiree medical caps in the 2008 Agreement have not be reached for the year 2012. Therefore, under the currently extended contracts there is no retiree medical contribution for 2012.  This is, of course, is subject to change in any new CBA.

As the New Year is about to start the officers would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. With the start of the new year you should expect to see more and more changes from the local officers and the executive board.

Here are a few notes;
* One change you will see is more information posted on Union bulletin boards and on the web site (new design coming soon). You should also be getting more emails from the local as information becomes available to us. We need feedback on the type of information that you want!!! Please advise your stewards or your DVP's or call the hall and leave a message with Ginny.
* The local has established a relocate list for anyone one in our local that would like to request a move from one garage to another. A member would call the hall and give Ginny their request. We will inform the company of the requests that we have on a regular basis. Just remember - the company will move the members - not the Union! We will have to process this list by seniority. If there are 3 people that would want to go to Druid Park from Harman's and the company would move or swap 1 - the senior person would be the one to go.
* Tim Gordon and I attended the MD presidents meeting on Friday 12/9 hosted by 2101. A lot of issues were brought up by all of the locals. Issues included, recent unemployment hearings, mobilization ideas, bargaining information, new officers, advanced and leadership training for stewards, Comcast spectrum partnership, political agenda, retiree healthcare and the lack of communication from the National and District to the Locals.
* Membership meetings were held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. We appreciate the members that came out and voiced their opinions and gave us a direction to move this local forward.
* On Tuesday December 13th we will be having our Executive Board meeting at the hall. We have these on a monthly basis. The Executive board discusses topics that affect the entire local. The next Board will be in January so if you have ideas or comments please contact your DVP so this information can be discussed at this meeting.
* New procedure starting January 2, 2012 in the grievance handling process of the Local. Every steward will be sent the new procedures and this information should be discussed with your DVP for any clarification that will be needed. The main purpose will be to have the grievance start at the hall so that they can be monitored and determine if we have a issue that should be filled as a Local grievance instead of individually. This should also help the DVPs and reduce some of their time chasing grievances from the members.
* Don't be surprised to see the officers from the Local at your work location. We will be working on a schedule to make visits to all the work locations and talk with the membership to keep them updated and informed and hopefully answer any questions that they may have. Remember, we can't be at every location all the time, but you will be seeing us on a more regular basis.

In solidarity,
Kevin Miller

To assist our members who have recently been moved we are currently starting to compile a list of members that would like to be moved to another location. Even if you weren't recently in a 'move' and would like to be at another location please contact the hall and give us your information. We will make every attempt to assist and inform the company of the requests.

May members that opted to take the EISP in 2010 have recently received letters from the company.
"After a number of discussions over the past 6 months the company has stated they will not extend these employees. This decision by the company makes absolutely no sense to the Union and only further demonstrates their mismanagement of this corporation", Gail Evans.
